Revisit the Mission & Identity Retreat

Have you made the half-day UDM Mission & Identity Retreat sometime in the last six years? If so, you're invited to make the retreat again, and share your experience with newer employees. Preview Blackboard Collaborate (the new Wimba), Nov. 15

The new version of the Wimba online collaboration suite is called Blackboard Collaborate, and it will be available for faculty use beginning Winter Term 2012.  Come learn about the new system, Tuesday, Nov. 15 from 2:30-3:30 p.m. in the McNichols Library, Room 324.  UDM's Instructional Design Studio (IDS) will introduce the changes and new features in Blackboard Collaborate. The new system is designed to enhance online teaching and learning, with more options for audio, video, file sharing and general classroom collaboration. For details and to register, see the IDS workshop page. For further information, contact Assistant IDS Director Mike Verdusco.

UDM employees and homeownership program on TV

WXYZ-TV Channel 7 will highlight UDM's Employee Homeownership Program, a benefit for UDM faculty and staff, as one of its "Detroit 2020" series features. UDM President Antoine M. Garibaldi, Director of University Ministry David Nantais and Financial Aid Coordinator Somer Roberts were all interviewed for the piece, which is scheduled to broadcast Thursday, Nov. 10 during the 5 p.m. news program.  If you miss Thursday's segment, look for it on the Detroit 2020 website. For more information on UDM's Employee Homeownership Program, contact Human Resources at 313-993-1036.

Retirement reception for Law's Sr. Colleen Hickey, Nov. 20

Please join the retirement celebration honoring Sr. Colleen Hickey, S.S.J., and her more than 40 years of loyal service to the School of Law Library, Sunday, Nov. 20. The celebration will begin with Mass at 11 a.m. at Sts. Peter and Paul Jesuit Church (629 East Jefferson Ave., Detroit), immediately followed by a brunch in the School of Law Atrium. Parking is available in the Larned Street School lot.

Dick Vitale to be honored at Dec. 5 basketball game

Come join the fun when Titan Athletics honors one of college basketball's premiere ambassadors, former University men's basketball coach Dick Vitale, Monday, Dec. 5 at 6 p.m., just before the UDM game against St. John's. A national TV audience will witness the dedication of UDM's basketball court as Dick Vitale Court at Calihan Hall. UDM mobile site online for smartphones

University of Detroit Mercy now has a site for prospective students designed especially for mobile devices. The site allows mobile-optimized access to information about UDM's academic programs, financial aid, campus life and more, on any smartphone browser at www.udmercy.mobi. Check it out and pass the address on to anyone with a smartphone who may be considering UDM.

1968 and 1969 Tower yearbooks online

The UDM Libraries/Instructional Design Studio has released the 1968 and 1969 Tower Yearbooks into the digital archives.  Additional University yearbooks will be added every two months until the online collection is complete and up to date. Thumbs Up!

Associate Professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry Matt Mio presented the poster, "Learning the principles and concepts of green chemistry in organic synthetic laboratories at UDM," at the 2011 session of the "Michigan Green Up: Green Chemistry and Engineering" conference, Oct. 27 in Ann Arbor. Mio's poster was named the best undergraduate-based teaching poster at the meeting.

Associate Professor of Biology Mary Tracy-Bee was invited to serve as a member of the Education Affairs Committee for the American Association of Anatomists.

Vice President for Academic Affairs Pamela Zarkowski was recently elected Vice President for Programs of the American Dental Association (ADA) Foundation. She will also serve on the Foundation's executive committee. The ADA Foundation is dentistry's premier philanthropic and charitable organization. Zarkowski also gave the presentation "FERPA: Musts, mays and myths," at the ADA's annual fall meeting to academic, financial aid, admissions and student affairs administrators, Oct. 20 in San Antonio.
