UDM names Antoine Garibaldi as new president
On Nov. 12, the University of Detroit Mercy Board of Trustees named Antoine M. Garibaldi as the University’s new president. Garibaldi, who is currently president of Gannon University in Erie, Pa., will assume the position July 1, 2011. Two honored with Faculty Excellence Awards
Professor of Psychology Elizabeth M. Hill received the Distinguished Faculty Award and Associate Professor of Mathematics & Computer Science Abhijit Dasgupta was honored with the Faculty Achievement Award during the Faculty Recognition Dinner, Nov. 12. Each year, recipients of these awards are nominated by faculty representing all of UDM's schools and colleges. See the UDM photo gallery of the event.
Sign up for UDM’s Emergency Alert System
The Department of Public Safety is encouraging the UDM community to sign up for their Emergency Alert System (EAS), which provides immediate notification of class cancellations, campus security issues or other emergencies. The system, provided in conjunction with Wayne County's Homeland Security Alert System, will send timely notices to your cell phones, home phones, text pagers or e-mail. Registering more than one device is encouraged. The University will run a test of EAS on Monday, Nov. 22 at 1 p.m. To sign up, visit the EAS page.

Ford Motor Company executive to speak at UDM, Nov. 18
Ford Motor Company’s Group Vice President of Design and Chief Creative Officer J Mays will give the lecture, “Innovation and Design,” as the keynote presentation of the 2010 Ford Innovation Symposium. The symposium will be held on Thursday, Nov. 18 at 6 p.m. in Ford Life Sciences Building, Room 113. For more information, see the news release.
Volunteer opportunities available, Nov. 14-20
UDM will participate in “National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week,” Nov. 14-20. The goal of the project is to increase awareness of the problems of hunger and homelessness, both within our community and nationally. Consider participating and encourage your students to volunteer during this week. A list of events can be found in the news release.
Theatre Company offers discount to UDM employees

Faculty and staff are invited to participate in focus group
UDM’s Great College Project Team invite faculty and staff to participate in a focus group to discuss workplace experiences. The purpose of the focus group discussion is to share the survey results of "Great Colleges to Work For," and gather suggestions for workplace improvement at UDM. Participation is voluntary and the confidentiality of all participant responses will be assured. The focus group will hold four sessions:
- Thursday, Nov. 18, 12:45 p.m.
- Tuesday, Nov. 30, 1 p.m. and 2:30 p.m.
- Tuesday, Dec. 7, at 1 p.m.
The sessions will be held in the Student Center, President’s Dining Room. If you are willing to participate in one of these focus group sessions, e-mail the Human Resources department at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Survey regarding the Research@UDM seminar series available
UDM's Office of Sponsored Programs is seeking your input about the Research@UDM Seminar Series. The survey seeks information on how to better meet UDM’s research needs. Employees are asked to take the survey before Tuesday, Nov. 30!
UDM's Language & Cultural Training Department recently held two full-day cultural seminars in Novi for 40 employees of Magna Seating North America, which is preparing to expand business in Brazil.
Professor of History Gregory Sumner has signed a contract with Seven Stories Press to publish his manuscript, Unstuck in Time: Kurt Vonnegut's 14 Novels and the American Dream. The book is scheduled for a November 2011 release.
Assistant Professor of Education Lorri MacDonald wrote the article, “Using virtual graphic organizers to enhance science reading comprehension,” published in the Fall 2010 issue of Michigan Science Teachers Association Journal.
