Founders Celebration in September
Throughout September, UDM will celebrate 133 years of commitment to Detroit by the University's founding sponsors, the Society of Jesus and the Religious Sisters of Mercy. Plan to attend some of the Founders Celebration activities, including UDM Night at Comerica Park, Celebrate Spirit! and more. Exhibit: "The Wild Imagination at Play"
On display in the McNichols Library is the exhibit, "The Wild Imagination at Play: Interactions between Newspaper Cartooning, Comic Books and Animation," through Aug. 21. Come enjoy a diverse collection of whimsical items, from early 20th century newspaper cartoons to zoetropes and 1980s electronic animation toys, featuring characters from Little Nemo to Mickey Mouse to Ren and Stimpy.

Session leaders wanted for student leadership conference
The UDM Student Senate is looking for faculty or staff members to lead sessions during the Campus & Service Leadership Conference, to be held Saturday, Sept. 18 on McNichols Campus. If you have something to share (in a 50-55 minute format) to help students learn and develop various leadership skills, please contact the Student Life Office at 313-993-1150. Proposals are needed by Friday, Sept. 3.
At the annual meeting of the Botanical Society of America, Associate Professor of Biology Stokes S. Baker organized the symposium, "Broader impacts: Connecting education with basic research," presented two refereed papers, ran a workshop on digital imaging technology, and became the chair of the teaching section, July 31 - Aug. 4 in Providence, R.I.
UDM Vice Vice President for University Advancement Greg Cascione delivered the opening presentation, "Advancement in a Jesuit context," at the Jesuit Advancement Administrators Conference, which took place at the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Mass., July 11.
Assistant Professor Jeff Ingalsbe and Professor Dan Shoemaker of the Computer Information Systems department were both quoted in the Seattle Times article, "'Barefoot Bandit' Harris-Moore may have been nothing without the Internet," July 10. Ingalsbe was also interviewed on Seattle's ABC-TV affiliate WKOMO, July 12 on how the Internet presents a challenge to law enforcement agencies.
Assistant Professor of Nursing Andrea Kwasky co-authored the article, "Quality of life and dementia: An integrated review of literature," which was published in the July/Sept. issue of the journal, Alzheimer's Care Today.
Jill Loewen, clinical assistant professor of Patient Management in the School of Dentistry, presented the web-based program, "Tobacco use prevention and treatment: Impact on oral health," July 15 to teach participants how to identify the impact of tobacco use on oral health and how to help patients quit tobacco. The program was sponsored by the Michigan Dept. of Community Health.
