New trustees elected to UDM board

The University of Detroit Mercy Board of Trustees recently elected three new members: The Honorable Denise Langford Morris, Oakland County Circuit Court judge; Derrick Kuzak, group vice president, Global Product Development, Ford Motor Company; and Terence V. Tuskegee airman visits UDM, Nov. 13

World War II veteran Lieutenant Colonel Washington D. Ross '74, is scheduled to speak to UDM students, Friday, Nov. 13 at 11 a.m. in the Briggs Building Room 25.  One of the first African-American military pilots in the country, Ross served in the U.S. Army Air Corps' 332nd Fighter Group, popularly known as the Tuskegee Airmen.

After flying 63 missions in Europe, Ross earned a master's degree in Education from University of Detroit and taught in Detroit Public schools for 29 years.  Learn more about Ross in a 2008 Daily Tribune article.  The film, The Tuskegee Airmen, will be shown on campus Tuesday, Nov. 10 at 6:40 p.m. in the Ford Life Sciences Building Room 115.

Project SALUTE on Veterans Day, Nov. 11

Wednesday, Nov. 11 is Veterans Day, a time to thank and honor all who have served honorably in the military, whether in war or in peacetime.  Low-income veterans continue to find help at the UDM School of Law's Mobile Law Office, which assists them with their disability and pension claims.  Hear more in a radio interview between Sunday Edition's Alisa Zee and Tammy M. Kudialis, UDM Law professor and director of Project SALUTE, recorded in honor of Veterans Day.

Food collections continue

In addition to the Dining Services can drive (running through Thursday, Nov. 12), the Student Senate's Mission and Values Committee has begun a collection drive to coincide with National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week, Nov. 15 - 21.

Bring non-perishable food items, winter clothing and toiletries to the Committee's donation boxes located around McNichols Campus in the Library, academic buildings, Grounds Coffeehaus and in the Student Center by the Student Senate and University Ministry offices, by Monday, Dec. 7.

Study Abroad Fair and International Friendship Luncheon, Nov. 19

The Study Abroad Fair is a chance for students to discover opportunities for study or service around the world, including in Brazil, China, Greece, Italy, Jamaica and Spain.  Hosted by UDM's Language & Cultural Training (LCT) Department, this year's Study Abroad Fair will take place Thursday, Nov. 19, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., in the International Services Office lounge, next to the Student Center Ballroom.  The fair occurs during International Education Week, Nov. 16-20.

The fair will take place in conjunction with the International Friendship Luncheon in the Ballroom. Lunch will be covered under students' meal plans. (Persons without meal plans may purchase all-you-can eat meals for $6.75.)  In addition to food, cultural displays and prize give-aways, program directors and Financial Aid staff will be on hand to answer questions about studying or serving abroad.  For details, call LCT Director Lara Wasner at 313-993-1191.  See the Study Abroad web page.

Engineering student projects on TV, Nov. 17

Last August, a TV crew from the show, A Wider World, came to UDM to record a segment on the Mechanical Engineering senior capstone design projects, which were focused on helping people deal with disability issues.  The segment is set to broadcast Tuesday, Nov. 17 at 5:30 p.m. on Detroit's PBS affiliate, WTVS Channel 56.  The show will also be broadcast in 30 markets across the country including San Francisco, New York and North Carolina at different times throughout the month.

The following faculty presented the roundtable, "Beyond Formation: Re/creating space for feminist rhetoric(s) within a Catholic university," at the Feminism(s) and Rhetoric(s) Conference, Oct. 8 at Michigan State University: Assistant Professor of English Laurie Britt-Smith, Professor of English Claire Crabtree, Associate Professor of English Heather Hill-Vasquez, Associate Librarian Kris McLonis and Associate Professor of English Rosemary Weatherston.

Distinguished Visiting Professor of Law Logan Robinson wrote the commentary, "Ford learns the price of solvency," published Nov. 7 on Forbes.com.
