Titan Fit Zone gets active

Titan Fit Zone, UDM's new fitness facility downstairs in the Student Center, is off to a strong start.  Hundreds of visitors have already registered and made use of the fitness equipment and classes, and the online magazine Model D featured the space in a recent article.  See the Titan Fit Zone page for more information.

CTE Award nominations due, Nov. 2

This is the last week for you to nominate deserving staff or administrative colleagues for UDM's Commitment to Excellence Award.  The deadline for submitting nominations is 5 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 2.   Please visit the award web page for more information and the nomination form.

Ethics Bowl volunteers needed

Consider volunteering as a moderator or judge for the 2009 UDM Ethics Bowl.  No special ethics knowledge is needed!  The 10th annual Ethics Bowl will be held Friday, Nov. 6. If you are interested in committing part of that afternoon, please send an e-mail to ethicsbowl@udmercy.edu.  See the Ethics Bowl web site.

Mission Micro Grant applications due, Nov. 15

The deadline for UDM faculty, staff and administrators to apply for a Mission Micro Grant is Sunday, Nov. 15. A Mission Micro Grant is a grant of $50 to $250 to be used in support of activities that promote UDM's mission. (See the UDM Mission site.)

Engineering & Science highlights

Engineering & Science faculty and students were on hand at the Catholic League's annual Prep Bowl, Oct. 24 at Ford Field. UDM's champion robot, Thor, was on the field to perform the ceremonial coin toss.

School of Dentistry offers free endodontics care

On Oct. 24, the UDM School of Dentistry helped screen adults to find 50 to receive free root canal and restorative treatment.  The selected patients will receive this endodontics care at UDM's School of Dentistry.  See the news release for more information.

School of Law hosts social media networking expert

The UDM School of Law will host a social media networking workshop, "The Six Ps of the big three: using Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn for job searching and business development," on Thursday, Oct. 29 from 5 to 8 p.m. in the Law School Atrium on the Riverfront Campus.  The event is open to all attorneys and law students.  The keynote speaker will be Amanda C. Ellis, a national expert on attorney job placement, marketing and business development.  See the event registration page.

Poetry reading and open-mike event, Nov. 15

A free poetry reading and open-mike event will be hosted by the Dudley Randall Center for Print Culture, Sunday, Nov. 15 from 3 to 6 p.m. in the Grounds Coffeehaus, downstairs in the Student Center.  For more information, contact Rosemary Weatherston at weatherr@udmercy.edu.

Thumbs Up!

UDM's Language & Cultural Training Department is providing French language instruction for seniors at U of D Jesuit High School.  The students are taking one UDM French class this fall, with the intention of completing another this winter, which will qualify them for UDM's intermediate-level certificate in language studies.

Professor of Business Administration Mary Ann Hazen wrote articles on workplace grief, which were recently published in Organizational Dynamics and The Academy of Management Perspectives.  Hazen also presented at and participated in a panel and a workshop at the annual meeting of the Academy of Management, last August in Chicago.

Jocelyn Bennett-Garraway and Sheri Pickover, assistant professors of Counseling/Addiction Studies, gave the presentation, "Socio-economic status as a cultural language perspective for communication styles for group work with economically disadvantaged clients," at the annual Counselor Education and Supervision conference in San Diego, Oct. 17.
