Campus 5K run to collect food donations
UDM's Student Alumni Association and the Alpha Phi Omega service fraternity will host a Fall 5K run, Thursday, Oct. 22, beginning at 6 p.m. at the Fisher Fountain. At the Boogie Nights event
See Titan basketball kick-off videos and coverage
The Titan basketball teams kicked off their season, Oct. 16 with a "Boogie Nights" theme. Video clips from the event are online on the Titans' YouTube channel, and you can also see a segment featuring men's basketball coach Ray McCallum with WXYZ-TV's Tom Leyden at Calihan Hall on DetroitTitans.com. The UDM basketball teams were also covered recently in The Detroit News and the Detroit Free Press.
Student writing and art wanted for [sic]
Encourage your students to submit their creative works to [sic], UDM's student arts journal. For the 2009-10 issue, [sic] is currently collecting poems, short stories, personal essays, academic essays, photographs and other visual art work. Multiple submissions are welcome, but the deadline is Friday, Nov. 6. For format details and submissions, students should contact Associate Professor of English Rosemary Weatherston at weatherr@udmercy.edu.
UDM/Ford partnership in the news
UDM's collaboration with Ford Motor Company is making national news. The partnership was recently shown in the UDM/Ford Innovation Contest, where teams of UDM students presented proposals for new applications for Ford's SYNC in-car communications system. Ford's tapping of UDM student minds was recently covered by ABC News, The Detroit News and USA Today.
Free yoga classes in Titan Fit Zone
Throughout October and November, drop-in yoga classes will be offered free for UDM students, faculty and staff. The classes will take place Monday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings at 7:30 p.m. in the new Titan Fit Zone Wellness Room, downstairs in the Student Center.
Mats are provided and space will be determined on a first-come, first-serve basis. Participants must complete the Titan Fit Zone registration form. For more information, see the Titan Fit Zone web page.
Technology Discovery Day video online
Hundreds of high school students will be on McNichols Campus, Friday, Oct. 23 for the 19th annual Technology Discovery Day, an event designed to expose students to engineering and science. Associate Professor of Biology Stokes Baker has been invited to give the seminar presentation, "Epifluorescent photography of whole plants expressing green fluorescent protein: uses in teaching and research," to the Environmental and Plant Biology Department of Ohio University.
Professor of Chemistry & Biochemistry Mark Benvenuto, graduate student Meghann Mouyianis, and undergraduate student Danielle Garshott gave the presentation, "Chemistry, math, archaeology and global warming effects in the Amazon," at the Michigan Alliance for Environmental & Outdoor Education's 21st annual conference, Oct. 9 in Dearborn.
Interim Dean of the College of Business Administration Gerald Cavanagh, S.J., chaired the session, "Ethics and management: contracts and justice," at meetings of the International Academy of Management, in August in Chicago.
Professor Emeritus of Criminal Justice Studies Daniel B. Kennedy recently authored the foreword to the textbook, Forensic Criminology. Also, his article, "Terrorists Behind Bars," was published in the August issue of American Jails.
David Koukal, associate professor of Philosophy, gave the convocation address at his undergraduate alma mater, Shimer College, in Chicago, Oct. 17.
UDM's Language & Cultural Training Department has expanded its partnership with Sacred Heart Seminary to include ESL course work, academic writing and reading efficiency support.
Kathi Shepherd, associate professor of Periodontology & Dental Hygiene, and the UDM Dental Clinic were highlighted in a recent HometownLife.com article, "Good health begins with the mouth."
Joseph A. Weglarz, lecturer in Economics, was the recipient of the 2009 Crystal Apple Award by the Michigan Council on Economic Education, Oct. 6. The award is given to individuals who encourage and instruct Michigan educators in their use of various MCEE materials in the classroom.
