President's Convocation, Aug. 17
UDM President Gerard L. Stockhausen, S.J., invites all faculty, administrators and staff to the 2009 President's Convocation, Monday, Aug. 17. Mark your calendars for the entire day, which will begin at Calihan Hall with a continental breakfast at 8:30 a.m. The program portion of the day will begin promptly at 9:15 a.m. followed by a picnic and an afternoon of fun and games. Biology Club raises funds to fight cancer
The UDM Biology Club participated in this year's American Cancer Society "Relay for Life" event, May 30 in Royal Oak. This year, the Biology team raised $3,077, ranking them second in fund-raising out of 27 teams at the event. The team also won the "Best Team Spirit" award.
Graduate student Kevin Crumpley is helping get a head start on next year's fund-raising by collecting used printer cartridges. If you'd like to help, contact him through the Biology Office at 313-993-1180.
Assessment workshop, "Rubrics"
UDM faculty are invited to an assessment workshop, Thursday, Aug. 20 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Student Center Fountain Lounge. (Lunch will be provided.) The workshop will focus on developing and using scoring tools, "rubrics," both to save time grading papers and to better communicate assignment expectations. The speaker will be Dannelle D. Stevens, professor of Curriculum and Instruction at Portland State University.

Laurie Britt-Smith, assistant professor of English, gave the presentation, "Social justice goes digital," at the Computers and Writing Conference, June 21 at USC Davis (Davis, Calif.).
Associate Professor of Education Isaiah McKinnon participated in the Holocaust Teacher Fellowship Program, June 1-5, at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C. The program focuses on developing educators to serve in a global effort to ensure quality Holocaust education in our schools. Participant educators plan to lead workshops, serve on boards, lead study trips to Holocaust sites and serve as conduits to the Holocaust Museum for educators, institutions, students, professional organizations and community groups.
Associate Professor of Electrical & Computer Engineering Sandra Yost, CSJ (Congregation of St. Joseph), celebrates her jubilee as a religious sister (25 years). She attended a special Mass and dinner for religious jubilarians hosted by the Archdiocese of Detroit at St. John's Center, May 27. Yost also celebrated her jubilee in June with her congregation and UDM President Gerard L. Stockhausen, S.J.
