Law and religion lecture, March 18
University of Houston Legal Ethics Professor Leslie Griffin will be the guest speaker for the School of Law's 10th annual McElroy Lecture on Law and Religion. The lecture will be held on Tuesday, March 18 at 5:30 p.m. at Sts. Peter and Paul Jesuit Church, followed with a reception in the School of Law Atrium. For more information, see the news release.
Coach Watson retires
On March 5, Perry Watson, the second-winningest head coach of the Detroit Titans men's basketball team, announced his retirement after 15 seasons on the job. Associate Head Coach Kevin Mondro has served as interim head coach since Watson began a leave of absence in January for medical reasons. For the latest athletics news, see DetroitTitans.com.
Spring marketing campaign under way
UDM's integrated marketing campaign for spring is in process from March 3-19 with radio, print and limited TV advertising. Five billboards promoting UDM are currently located along major highways and thoroughfares; two of the billboards highlight UDM as the host institution for the NCAA Midwest Regional, March 28 and 30 (see below). Volunteers sought for NCAA Midwest Regional
UDM is the host institution for the 2008 NCAA Men's Basketball Midwest Regional games, March 28 and 30, and the UDM community is encouraged to volunteer for the event. Volunteers are needed throughout the Midwest Regional weekend to help ensure a positive Detroit experience for players, coaches and fans alike.
Volunteers are needed to welcome and assist people in a number of capacities at area hotels, airports and outside Ford Field. (All volunteer opportunities are outside the Ford Field venue.) Jesuit MBA national day of service
All Master's of Business Administration (MBA) faculty and alumni are invited to join the College of Business Administration — as well as Jesuit MBA programs across the country — in a Jesuit MBA service event. On Saturday, April 12 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., the UDM group will clean up the playground and church surroundings of Gesu Parish and School.
Plese bring rakes, shovels, garbage bags and gloves. All volunteers will be treated to lunch in the Commerce & Finance Building following the event. R.S.V.P. by e-mail to either Bonnie Naski or Jacqui Bell.

Fr. Kesicki
New Jesuit leader for Detroit Province
Timothy P. Kesicki, S.J., has been named the next Provincial of the Detroit Province of the Society of Jesus. Fr. Kesicki will take office this summer, replacing his predecessor, Robert J. Scullin, S.J.
In the past, Fr. Kesicki worked at the University of Detroit Jesuit High School and Academy as well as Detroit's Loyola High School. To find out more about Fr. Kesicki, see the jesuitdet.org site.
Michigan economy symposium
The UDM Department of Economics at Macomb University Center will host a symposium on the current state of Michigan's economy, Saturday, April 5 from 9 a.m. to noon at Macomb University Center in Clinton Township, Room UC-1. Professor of Law Lawrence Dubin has been quoted in several news stories recently regarding the Detroit police whistle-blower cases and the mayoral text messaging scandal. One instance is the March 6 Detroit Free Press article, "What the experts said about the lawyers," in which Dubin and other legal ethics experts analyze the conduct of attorneys in the whistle-blower cases.
School of Law Professor and Associate Dean for Academic Affairs Gary Maveal wrote a March 7 "On the Docket" column in The Oakland County Legal News, "Reviving Michigan's Consumer Protection Act." Maveal is working with the State Bar Consumer Law Section Council in an effort to improve consumer protection in Michigan. The column can be read in an online forum.
