UDM community to gather for Celebrate Spirit,
Sept. 15
UDM
officially welcomes the new school year with Celebrate Spirit on
Thursday, September 15 at 11:30 a.m. in Calihan Hall. The celebration
includes a multimedia presentation and Mass of the Holy Spirit, followed
by a picnic lunch and Student Organizations Fair by the fountain.
The class schedule for the day will be modified to accommodate the
event. For more detailed information on the day's class schedule

Engineering programs reaccredited
The Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology has reaccredited UDM's
bachelor degrees in Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Mechanical
Engineering. These programs have been continuously accredited since 1936,
the first year any engineering programs in the country were accredited.
Michigan poets to compete, Sept. 10
Shout Out! Young Poets Rising, a juried spoken word competition
for Michigan poets, ages 16-35, will be held Saturday, September 10
from 6 to 9 p.m. The first half of the event (approximately 6 to 7:30
p.m.) will be held in the Life Sciences Building, Room 113. The second
half of the event (approximately 7:30 to 9 p.m.) will be held in the
McNichols Campus Library. The competition, which is held in honor of
Broadside Press' 40th anniversary, is free and open to the public and
will include an exhibition about Dudley Randall and Broadside Press
and a reception. The event is hosted by the UDM McNichols Library and
the Dudley Randall Center for Print Culture. For more information,

UDM students attend World Youth Day
Five
UDM students participated in World Youth Day in Cologne, Germany as
part of a 15-day pilgrimage in August. The students: Andrea Hooper,
Andy Mansour, Joshua Reiter, Sarah Shaffer and Jason Vassel, were among
a million young people at the Mass celebrated by Pope Benedict XVI
on Sunday, August 21.
Thumbs Up!
Gloria Albrecht, professor of Religious Studies, gave the keynote address at the Annual Meeting of the Michigan Coalition for Human Rights held June 21 in Detroit. The title of her presentation was "Family Values: Lifting the Veil and Exposing the Lie," a critique of US political and economic policies toward families.
Nicholas Rombes, associate professor of English, is the editor of New Punk Cinema, published by Edinburgh University Press as part of its series on "Traditions in World Cinema."
Aloha VanCamp, associate professor of Sociology, was elected to the Board of Directors of the Michigan Association of Baccalaureate Social Work Educators (MABSWE). MABSWE represents all colleges and universities with accredited undergraduate social work programs. The organization provides input and consultation on political and social legislation affecting social work education in Michigan.
