School of Law Mobile Law Office Hits the Road with
Free Legal Advice ...and Turkeys?
Last November, with the help of some very generous donors, the UDM School
of Law created a one-of-a-kind Mobile Law Office for those who would normally
not have access to legal services. For its one-year anniversary, Law School
Dean Mark Gordon and Urban Law Clinic Director Michael Bryce both decided
to do something special for the holidays.

CLAE Alumnus Wins National Book Award
As UDM’s tagline states “we want great things for you.”
And great things certainly occurred for CLAE alumnus Kevin Boyle ‘82.
On November 17, Boyle won the National Book Award for the best book of 2004
in the nonfiction category. His winning book, Arc of Justice: A Saga
of Race, Civil Rights, and Murder in the Jazz Age, tells the moving
story of an African American family’s fight to live in a white Detroit
neighborhood in the 1920s. [Read

Margaret Auer, dean of the McNichols Campus Library and
Instructional Design Studio, presented the paper, “Ensuring Patron
Privacy: How Libraries Create and Manage Policies that Assure Patron Privacy
and Freedom of Inquiry,” at the Michigan Library Association Annual
Meeting in Traverse City, Mich.
Diane Praet, University Registrar, began her year as President of the Michigan Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers (MACRAO) at the 76th Annual Conference, held November 10-12 in Dearborn, Mich. Praet was the chair of this event, which featured former UDM Vice President John Burkhardt as the opening speaker.
