Joe Coriaty (class of '78) of Fredrick Fisher Partners of Los Angeles will present recent projects from his award-winning firm, as well as discuss the impact his education in Detroit influenced his design thinking.
Working in the auto factories of Detroit influenced Joe Coriaty's process for making architecture and its placement in the changing urban context of modern America. After graduating from the University of Detroit, Joe completed his Masters degree at the University of Southern California and soon became one of the founding principles of Frederick Fisher and Partners Architecture in Los Angeles. He was lead designer on such notable projects as MoMA P.S.1 in New York, the Annenberg Center for Information Science and Technology at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, the Colby College Museum of Art Museum in Maine and locally at the Flint Institute of Art.
His body of work promotes sustainable design principles that respect the client's budget and cultivates a sense of rigor, beauty and authenticity. The firms most recent project, the Annenberg Community Beach House, bridges historic preservation with a new LEED certified modernist structure.

A reading and book signing by Kelly Barth, author of the new memoir My Almost Certainly Real Imaginary Jesus.
Like many American kids, author Kelly Barth went to Sunday school, sang songs about Zacchaeus, and was tucked in with bedtime prayers. A typical Christian kid, that is, until she develops a searingly deep crush on another little girl playing after-hours in church, and more importantly, until Jesus "a tiny, imaginary Jesus, one that stays; safely tucked behind the baseboard or the petals of a peony" becomes her invisible friend and constant companion.
In her new memoir, My Almost Certainly Real Imaginary Jesus, Barth gives us a candid, touching, and often hilarious account of her journey from childhood to adulthood, and from a fear-driven fundamentalism to a mature spirituality that leaves her both "happily partnered and churched" (Library Journal). Along the way she enables readers to join her in exploring some of the lesser mapped territories of religion, faith, Christianity, authorship, love, and sexuality.
Please join Kelly Barth for a discussion on the art of memoir writing and a reading from her new book. Barth's talk will be followed by a book signing. This event is co-sponsored by the Women's and Gender Studies Program, Religious Studies department, English department, and Gay-Straight Alliance. It is free and open to the public. For more information contact Rosemary Weatherston, WGS Director, at 313-993-1083 / weatherr@udmercy.edu.

Join the UDM Green Team for a screening of the 2011 Academy Award nominated short film, Sun Come Up. Sponsored by Catholic Coalition on Climate Change, this national screening of the film coincides with the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi (October 4), patron saint of those who promote ecology. Refreshments will be provided.
The film depicts the struggle of the inhabitants of the Cartaret Islands north of Bougainville, Papua New Guinea, some of the world's first climate refugees, as they try to find a new home for their people. Rising sea levels are forcing them to leave their ancestral island, with limited resources to buy land on the mainland.
