"Testimonios of Migrants, Chicana Studies and Indigenous Youth Empowerment"
In this lecture, Dr. Estrella Torrez will interrogate her own academic career from the autoethnographic perspective of a Latina working in the academy, highlighting how her personal experiences as a migrant farmworker ideally prepared her to work in the university. Using testimonios, a form of counter-storytelling used within Chicana Studies, Dr. Torrez will investigate the importance of these stories for Latino community survival and youth empowerment. Then, the youth will perform Danza Mexicayotl, a traditional Indigenous dance from Mesoamerica. (Light refreshments will be served).
Furthermore, she will introduce her academic-activist work with rural Latino and urban Indigenous communities as the means to promote and (re)produce the stories, languages, and cultural practices that have historically sustained these communities. Bridging the fields of education, sociology, and ethnic studies, Dr. Torrez's talk will inspire one to find their own intellectual home which maps community-based knowledge onto Latino education.
About the Speaker: DR. ESTRELLA TORREZ is an Assistant Professor at Michigan State University, USA. Her scholarship centers on language politics and the importance of community-based knowledge, particularly among rural migrant families and urban Indigenous youth. Dr. Torrez is a Gates Millennium Scholar, being awarded the prestigious award during its inaugural year. While she began her collegiate career at the University of Detroit Mercy, Dr. Torrez ultimately finished her undergraduate career at Western Michigan University where she earned a BS in Elementary Education. She continued her academic career at the University of New Mexico earning an MA with dual concentrations in Early Childhood Multicultural Education and Bilingual Education, and a PhD in Educational Thought and Sociocultural Studies with a concentration in Bilingual Education. Recently, Dr. Torrez cofounded and directs the Indigenous Youth Empowerment Program, a program serving urban Native youth in Michigan.
As a child, Torrez attended specific schools for migrant children until, at the age of twelve, she began working alongside her parents and grandparents in the fields. Later, she taught within the same migrant educational system, eventually working for the Office of Migrant Education in Washington, DC. Her interest in language politics stems from her own experience struggling to maintain her community's heritage language and pass it on to her two daughters. A Midwest Xicana (Indigenous Mexican American), Dr. Torrez has lead multiple study abroad programs to Mexico, as well as an Indigenous and Latino focused seminar in the US Southwest. Presently, she collaborates with MSU's College Assistance Migrant Program, High School Equivalency Program and the Lansing School District's Bilingual/Bicultural programs. Her current research focuses primarily on migrant education in rural America, urban Native education in the Midwest, and writing autoethnographies of the experiences of women o

Join CLASA, HASA and AASP for a free performance of BombaRica, Osvaldo Rivera and Consuela Lopez, Co-Directors. BombaRica was established to perform, promote and preserve folkloric musical idioms of the Spanish speaking Caribbean (rumba, cumbia, etc) with a particular emphasis on the centuries old Puerto Rican community dance form bomba. By doing so the troupe through its performances and presentations presents a historical perspective on how three primary cultural and racial "currents" (African, Spanish & Native American) have influenced present day Latin American and American music and culture.
The troupe's founding and continued efforts are based on the academic and performance work of Osvaldo. Rivera and others during the past thirty years. A significant component of the presentation features participatory segments for audience members in the form of dancing and drumming.

About the Webinar:
Up to 50% of students who have "built their dreams" of attaining a better life through education drop out before graduating. Many students do not thrive in their new environments because they are overwhelmed by the changes they face at larger institutions. The Transitions Model of William Bridges provides a good foundation for understanding the difficulties these students face and suggests practical ways to assist them in their journey - so they too can build on their dreams.
Student dropouts suffer a loss of self-esteem and decreased future employment opportunities. Their dreams turn to nightmares. Overall, the dropout rate for most educational institutions can be as high as 50%. The highest dropout rate for post-secondary institutions occurs in the first year of study; Students drop out for a variety of reasons; these reasons need to be determined early in the school year so help can be provided while it is still useful.
About the Presenter:
