Civil Rights Movement Trip
- Description:
- See how you can join Detroit Mercy students in learning about the southern Civil Rights Movement from 1955 through 1968 by traveling to the landmarks of that movement in Alabama, Mississippi, and Tennessee. Visit Martin Luther King’s church and parsonage in Montgomery, walk across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, see where James Meredith integrated Ole Miss, assisted by thousands of federal troops, experience the National Civil Rights Museum in Memphis (which includes the Lorraine Motel balcony where King fell to an assassin’s bullet). By visiting these sites (and many others), and exploring what took place there, this travel course will bring the movement to life in all of its complexity and meaning, in a way not possible in a traditional classroom setting. It will also prompt students to reflect on contemporary questions of race and social justice.
This trip will be led by Detroit Mercy Professors of History Greg Sumner and Roy E. Finkenbine. So, of course, some southern culture – music, barbecue, soul food, church, and baseball – will be part of the experience (and necessary context).
