[4:30pm] Youth movements in South America
Description:
Please join UDM's Carney Latin American Solidarity Archive (CLASA) and Digital Media Studies program (DMS) in this Hispanic Heritage Month event, welcoming Maria-Carolina Cambre. Cambre will discuss the role of art, philosophy and "technologies of Friendship" in the social struggles of youth in Argentina and Venezuela. Tecnologías de la amistad (technologies of friendship) are a set of tactics in social and political struggle used by students at the University of Buenos Aires (UBA) in their takeover of the Social Sciences buildings and parking lot. This social experiment continues with invited participation and collaboration with sociologists, artists, planners and architects. The UBA parking lot has become a social laboratory for creative intervention at the intersection of art, politics and sociology reconfiguring space, objects and subjects. Also, a youth collective has taken over their neighborhood El Barrio 23 de Enero in Caracas, Venezuela. Cambre considers Hannah Arendt's (1959) theory of action as a parallel to what these youth call "actioning." Cambre is an artist/scholar teaching in the Sociology Department at King's University College at Western University, Ontario, Canada. As a child she left, with her family, from Argentina (and its dictatorship led by Juan Carlos Onganía) to Canada. She explores representation, global communication, ethics and social justice.

Sr. Angela Limiyo, RSM, is head of the MBB Pre-Nursing Internship Program. As a nurse and midwife, Sr. Limiyo has lived through the challenges of ministering in South Sudan.
