7:00pm [7:00pm] Precious Knowledge - Lecture: Dr. Chiara Cannella
Description:

We'll have a viewing of the documentary, "Precious Knowledge," about the Mexican-American Studies program in Arizona high schools that was recently banned under Arizona law.

To discuss the film and the educational program will be Dr. Chiara Cannella, who worked with students in the program. She is an Assistant Professor of Teacher Education at Fort Lewis College. Her work focuses on cultural diversity in education as well as socio-cultural perspectives on schooling. Her current research addresses educational equity for marginalized students. Through participatory action research in schools, she collaborates with students to construct stronger civic and social identities.

She has been active in the Council on Anthropology and Education and a co-principal investigator for the Research Collaborative on Youth Activism. She spent several years working with the Social Justice Education Project in the Tucson Unified School District (TUSD), studying how various programs affect students' academic and social identities. Dr. Cannella worked in TUSD's controversial Mexican American Studies classes from 2006-2008 and maintains connection with program graduates, teachers, and administrators. A forthcoming publication, "Food and Water: The Nourishment of a Humanizing Pedagogy," details the program's curriculum design and pedagogy, as well as their effects on students' shifts in academic engagement and social agency.

This event is sponsored by the James Carney Latin American Solidarity Archive (CLASA). Programs are free and open to the public, and are held at UDM's McNichols Campus (4001 W McNichols at Livernois).
