[2:00pm] Film Screening: Sun Come Up
Description:

Join the UDM Green Team for a screening of the 2011 Academy Award nominated short film, Sun Come Up. Sponsored by Catholic Coalition on Climate Change, this national screening of the film coincides with the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi (October 4), patron saint of those who promote ecology. Refreshments will be provided.

The film depicts the struggle of the inhabitants of the Cartaret Islands north of Bougainville, Papua New Guinea, some of the world's first climate refugees, as they try to find a new home for their people. Rising sea levels are forcing them to leave their ancestral island, with limited resources to buy land on the mainland. [2:00pm] Film Screening: Sun Come Up
Description:
Join the UDM Green Team for a screening of the 2011 Academy Award nominated short film, Sun Come Up, Friday, October 5, at 2:00PM in Chemistry 114, the lecture hall. Refreshments will be provided. Click here for the trailer. Sponsored by Catholic Coalition on Climate Change, this national screening of the film coincides with the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi (October 4), patron saint of those who promote ecology. The film depicts the struggle of the inhabitants of the Cartaret Islands north of Bougainville, Papua New Guinea, some of the world’s first “climate refugees,” as they try to find a new home for their people. Rising sea levels are forcing them to leave their ancestral island, with limited resources to buy land on the mainland. The Coalition’s website states: The film and accompanying materials demonstrate the important role that the Catholic Diocese of Bougainville has played in resettling some of these refugees and provides a concrete example of responding to Pope Benedict XVI’s, 2010 World Day of Peace Message: Can we remain indifferent before the problems associated with such realities as climate change . . . Can we disregard the growing phenomenon of ‘environmental refugees’, people who are forced by the degradation of their natural habitat to forsake it – and often their possessions as well – in order to face the dangers and uncertainties of forced displacement? (No. 4) –Pope Benedict XVI
