International Students
Thank you for your interest in International Student studies at the University of Detroit Mercy (UDM). For the past 130 years, we have been providing quality education in a supportive environment that reflects the Catholic values of our Jesuit and Mercy traditions. As a comprehensive university, we offer a number of degrees in related fields, should your interests change.
For information about UDM, we encourage you to visit the UDM International Student Application web site. Here, you can learn about such benefits as our outstanding Co-Operative Education Program. This Program allows you to work off campus in your field of study, earning academic credit and a significant income. Graduate students are eligible for the co-op Program after 2 semesters. Undergraduate students are eligible for the co-op Program after 2 years. The salary earned on co-op is an important benefit.

A Note on English Proficiency
For international student applicants, English proficiency is demonstrated by students who come from a country where English is the primary language, as well as by completion of a four-year undergraduate or graduate degree at a college or university in the U.S. or in a country where English is the primary language.
Otherwise, while the University of Detroit Mercy admits academically qualified applicants with or without TOEFL scores (and currently we are not accepting IELTS scores), if you should become admitted to UDM without passing TOEFL scores (see these below), you will be given an English proficiency test (http://www.udmercy.edu/apply/international_students/iso/alcp/index.htm) when you arrive on campus. Based on the scores of that test, if you pass all sections, you will be exempt from further English-language study and allowed to go directly into a full-time program of study. Otherwise, you will be placed into either a full-time or part-time English-language (ESL) program based on your scores on the Detroit Test of American English.
NOTE: If you are placed into ESL coursework, you may have to defer starting your academic degree program by a semester or longer until you attain a satisfactory level of English proficiency.
The following scores are needed on the TOEFL to waive your English proficiency requirement...
Internet-based Test:
- total score of 100
- at least a 24 on the writing section
Computer-based Test:
- total score of 250
- at least a 5.0 on the essay
Paper-based Test:
- total score of 600
- at least a TWE (Test of Written English) score of 5
NOTE: All ESL coursework will be assessed at the rate as indicated online (http://www.udmercy.edu/apply/international_students/iso/tuition/index.htm), independent of all other fees and any applicable discounts.
