Luce Scholars named

UDM sophomores Lindsay Macomber and Amie Deana Hinshaw were named the 2005-2006 Luce Scholars. Macomber, who is majoring in Biochemistry/Mathematics, plans a career in pharmaceutical research and development. She currently serves as a research assistant in a computational chemistry lab and volunteers as a tutor/academic coach in the campus learning center.

Hinshaw, a Biochemistry major, also seeks a career in pharmaceutical research with a focus on developing cancer drugs. She currently volunteers as a tutor at the Mercy Education Project for girls and plans to do undergraduate research this summer.

The Luce Scholars are funded by a grant from the Clare Boothe Luce Foundation. The grant supports four, two-year scholarships for women majoring in math, science or engineering at UDM. The remaining two scholarships will be awarded in 2006.

Students receive academic honors

Sixty-nine College of Engineering & Science students were recognized with academic and scholarship awards at UDM’s annual Honors Convocation, April 3.

The following students exemplify the College’s mission in becoming professional engineers, scientists and mathematicians “through the discovery, application and dissemination of knowledge.”

Tau Beta Pi: The Tradition Continues

Tau Beta Pi, the national Engineering Honor Society, continues its long tradition at UDM with the recent induction of five students—Andrew Kerbrat, Monica Rensi, Bryan Grider, Arif Baig and Arion Willliams—into the Michigan Delta Chapter on March 18 at the original Buddy’s Pizzeria in Detroit.

The TBP chapter has operated continually since the 1940s and has inducted 1,731 members, including Jim Padilla, president, Ford Motor Company; Larry Washington, vice president, Dow Chemical; Walter Bryizk, chief scientist, U.S. Army TARDAC and Leo Hanifin, dean, UDM College of Engineering & Science.
