Luce Scholars named
UDM sophomores Lindsay Macomber and Amie Deana Hinshaw were named the 2005-2006 Luce Scholars. Macomber, who is majoring in Biochemistry/Mathematics, plans a career in pharmaceutical research and development. She currently serves as a research assistant in a computational chemistry lab and volunteers as a tutor/academic coach in the campus learning center.Hinshaw, a Biochemistry major, also seeks a career in pharmaceutical research with a focus on developing cancer drugs. She currently volunteers as a tutor at the Mercy Education Project for girls and plans to do undergraduate research this summer.
The Luce Scholars are funded by a grant from the Clare Boothe Luce Foundation. The grant supports four, two-year scholarships for women majoring in math, science or engineering at UDM. The remaining two scholarships will be awarded in 2006.
Students receive academic honors
Sixty-nine College of Engineering & Science students were recognized with academic and scholarship awards at UDM’s annual Honors Convocation, April 3.The following students exemplify the College’s mission in becoming professional engineers, scientists and mathematicians “through the discovery, application and dissemination of knowledge.”

Chemistry Club hosts merit badge workshop
Matt Mio, assistant professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry, with members of the Junior Girl Scout Troop 1013 at the "Base-ic Facts" station.
On Saturday, February 5, the Chemistry Club hosted a merit badge workshop for 20 girls from the Junior Girl Scout Troop 1013 on the McNichols Campus. The girls completed six activities to earn the merit badge, “Making it Matter.” Also participating in this workshop were Assistant Professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry Matt Mio, and Associate Professors of Chemistry and Biochemistry Elizabeth Roberts-Kirchhoff and Mark Benvenuto. This is the second year that the Chemistry Club has sponsored a merit badge workshop for Junior Scouts from the Detroit area.
