Faculty News

New faculty members:
Three new faculty members have joined the College of Engineering & Science:

James Lynch ’89, previously worked for Testing Engineers Consultants.

Michelle Andrzejak ’99, completed her Ph.D. at Wayne State University in cooperation with the Detroit Medical Center.

The chapter, “Quantitative Initiatives in College Biology: Profiles of Projects at Undergraduate Institutions," co-authored by Stokes Baker, associate professor of Biology, Jeffery Boats, associate professor of Mathematics and Computer Science, and Debra Hydorn of the University of Mary Washington, has been published in Math & Bio 2010: Linking Undergraduate Disciplines (The Mathematical Association of America, 2004).

Mary Lou Caspers, professor of Chemistry, was awarded the Faculty for Undergraduate Neuroscience (FUN) Educator of the Year 2004. This award is in recognition of significant efforts in support of the mission of FUN: to promote neuroscience education and research at the undergraduate level. The award was presented at the national meeting on Friday, October 25, in San Diego, Calif.

Assistant Professor of Chemistry/Biochemistry Matthew Mio received an award of $35,000 from the American Chemical Society’s Petroleum Research Fund to support research on the methodology of transition metal catalyzed cross-coupling reactions. The study will allow for the rapid generation of nanoscale device prototypes. The award enables five undergraduate students to participate in cutting-edge chemical research over the next two years.

President Gerard L. Stockhausen, S.J., Ph.D., and 2005 Mission Leadership Award recipient, Liz Roberts-Kirchhoff, associate professor of Chemistry

Liz Roberts-Kirchhoff, associate professor of Chemistry, received the University’s 2005 Mission Leadership Award for Faculty. Since joining UDM in 1997, Roberts-Kirchhoff has made a lasting impression on her faculty colleagues and students, not only in the academic field but also in her service to them and the community. In addition to her day-to-day teaching responsibilities, she has been instrumental in advising graduate students in chemistry and developing new programs, such as the new B.S./M.S degree, as well as developing opportunities for young women to explore careers in the sciences, such as the Girl Scout chemistry merit badge and an alumnae role-model program for young women students. Roberts-Kirchhoff has also instituted a service-learning component in her biochemistry class. But she also makes time personally for service activities, such as helping a family in need of home repair in order to keep its children, a homebound senior citizen who longs for company, or a seriously ill family member.

Faculty from the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry recently attended “A Medical Professions Career Night” at at William Beaumont Hospital. Gerald B. Zelenock '69, chair of the Department of Surgery and Chief of Surgical Services at the hospital, hosted the event that was attended by high school students and parents from around the state.
