November 19, The Institute
for Building Sustainable Communities, under the direction of
CBA Professor Mike Whitty, hosted former Attorney General of Michigan
Frank Kelley (LAW ’57), and Julie Metty Bennett, senior consultant
for Natural Resources at Public Sector Consultants Inc., who are
respectively co-chair and consultant to the Governor’s Michigan
Land Use Leadership Council. Kelley and Bennett presented the findings
of the Council as well as taking part in a discussion on the environmental
and economic challenges facing Michigan.
The Council was formed in February 2003 to address the trends,
causes and consequences of unmanaged growth and development in Michigan.
In August 2003, the Council provided its recommendations to minimize
the impact of current land use trends on Michigan's environment
and economy. For more information on the Council, please visit their
