Mark Benvenuto, associate professor and department chair
of Chemistry and Biochemistry, was one of two college professors in Michigan
to be named the 2003 Michigan College Science Teacher of the Year. The
Michigan Science Teachers Association selected Benvenuto for his innovative
approach to teaching that engages students in the learning process and
for his research contributions.
Dan Maggio, director of Pre-College Program, presented
"First LEGO League" and Barbara Hollar, professor
of Biology, presented "Searching the Web" at the New Directions
in Math & Science Education Conference for elementary, middle and
secondary school teachers in October 2003. The conference, which was held
on UDM’s Outer Drive Campus, was co-sponsored by the Engineering
Society of Detroit and Ford Motor Company.
Shulamith Schlick, professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry,
received an honorary doctorate degree from Sweden University, the top
technical university in Sweden.
The following Engineering & Science faculty received promotion or
tenure, effective August, 16, 2003:
Jeffrey Boats, was promoted to associate professor,
Math & Computer Science.
Nancy Dwyer, associate professor, Math & Computer
Science, was awarded tenure.
Katherine Snyder, assistant professor, Math & Computer
Science, was granted tenure.
Eswara Prasad Venugopal was promoted to associate professor,
Chemistry and Biochemistry.
