Social Work prepares for reaccreditation

The Highlighter and Laureate, Winter 2002

The Department of Social Work is preparing for a reaccreditation visit from the Council on Social Work Education early next year (probably February 2003).

As with other programs in the University, the former social work departments from U of D and Mercy College merged in 1990 with the consolidation of the two institutions. The University of Detroit program had been accredited since 1976 and the Mercy College of Detroit program received its initial accreditation in 1980. Since that time, the combined social work program has enjoyed continuous accreditation and looks forward to a successful program review.

The Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) is a non-profit national association representing over 3,000 individual members and 158 graduate and 453 undergraduate programs of professional social work education. Founded in 1952, CSWE is recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation as the sole accrediting agency for social work education in this country. The primary responsibility of CSWE is to promote and maintain the high quality of social work education.
