Do you have an analytical mind? Do you know how spaces are created and why they work (or don’t) for their intended purpose? Are you creative and imaginative and willing to look at fresh ways to approach designing the world around you? Then architecture may be the field for you. Our nationally recognized program gets its strength from a hands-on approach in which students use the most advanced technology beginning in their first semester. Detroit Mercy’s accredited program focuses on urban design with a special emphasis on sustainability and a commitment to community service. And our study abroad architecture program in Italy and Poland are unique experiences.

Great Things At Detroit Mercy

  • Small class sizes—our average student-to-teacher ratio is 11:1; that means plenty of individualized attention aimed at making sure our students succeed.
  • In the tradition of our Jesuit and Mercy sponsors, Detroit Mercy offers a well-rounded education. We don’t just teach architecture; we create community leaders.

Your Boundless Future

Opportunities for a rich, long career in architecture have never been better. By 2050, the United States will need to increase its building stock by 50 percent, so whether you want to design buildings to work, live or shop in, there is a need. Even if you don’t choose a traditional architectural career, you’ll find the problem-solving and analytical skills you learn here will be in great demand in many fields.

James Jenkins, ‘11, owner Jenkins Design Build, LLC

“Not until I was introduced to the study of architecture itself and its perfect balance of the technical and the creative and how it invokes and creates environments for this world, did I really meet something that completely drew me in and completely takes all of me to be responsible. One of the greatest things is the personal relationships with the professors. Credit the classroom sizes, credit the professors themselves … the time and effort they spend in order to ensure you go through the process the right way … is a perfect education in my experience.”

“There’s a lot more passion about architecture here than at other schools I’ve been. You will come away with knowledge of someone else’s experience that becomes your beginning point, so you will enter the profession with 30 years of experience.”
