Degree Requirements - Bachelor of Arts with a Major in Mathematics (126 credits)

This program is designed to give the student a classical mathematics education in the liberal arts tradition in preparation for teaching secondary or elementary school. In addition to the standard topics in mathematics, a student must select an elective course in advanced mathematics, computer science, and/or statistics. Early in the program, students should contact an advisor from the College of Liberal Arts & Education to oversee their teacher certification coursework. Besides the additional coursework for teacher certification, a twenty-hour teaching minor (approved by the student’s Education advisor) is also required. The student must earn at least a C grade in each MTH course and a 2.0 GPA overall in the major. Prospective teachers must earn a 2.7 GPA in the major. There are 36 credit hours in the major including the courses below and a minimum of 1 technical elective.

    Required Major Courses

    • MTH 1410 Analytic Geometry and Calculus I (4 credits)
    • MTH 1420 Analytic Geometry and Calculus II (4 credits)
    • MTH 2410 Analytic Geometry and Calculus III (4 credits)
    • MTH 3020 Linear Algebra with Applications (3 credits)
    • MTH 3060 Mathematical Thinking (3 credits)
    • MTH 2760 Discrete Structures (3 credits)
    • MTH 4050 Abstract Algebra I (3 credits)
    • MED 4830 Fundamental Concepts of Geometry (3 credits)
    • MED 4840 History of Mathematics (3 credits)
    • MED 4850 Probability and Statistics for Teachers (3 credits)
    • Elective see below (3 credits)

    Electives - flexibility and focus

To allow flexibility to address personal interests, students choose ONE or more courses from the following electives (other courses may be taken with advisor approval):
