DHY 8130 Radiology

This course will prepare the dental hygiene student to practice the science of oral and maxillofacial radiology. The course will cover radiation physics, the mechanisms of x-ray generation, the effects of exposure factors on the x-ray beam, and the interactions of x-radiation and matter. Image production and intraoral image receptors (digital and film) are also considered with emphasis placed on identifying and correcting errors resulting from improper exposure and processing. Emphasis is placed on techniques of intraoral radiography and identification and correction of errors. Panoramic and other extraoral projections are discussed, followed by specialized radiographic procedures. Radiation biology and protective measures are presented, with quality assurance protocols discussed in the context of radiation dose reduction. The course concludes with identification of normal radiographic landmarks, the principles of radiographic interpretation, detection of dental caries, recognition of periapical diseases and common bony lesions, and infection control procedures. | 3 | 0 | 0 | | |
