Description
The Health Services Administration program is designed to prepare individuals for middle management or clinical supervisory positions in organizations, institutions and agencies that deliver health services. This is accomplished by providing a strong theoretical foundation in management linked with applications to the health care system. Upon successful completion of the program, students are awarded a bachelor of science degree.
The program consists of two major components in addition to the UDM Core Curriculum: (1) the Health Services Administration major and (2) a professional area of specialization. A plan of study for this 15 credit hour professional area of specialization in a selected area of management of health services will be developed in consultation with the student’s academic advisor. Many allied health and nursing professionals can fulfill the professional area of specialization requirements through transfer credits.
Students also complete a seven-credit internship in a health care setting which allows them to apply the theory and skills learned in the program and provides an opportunity to explore potential employment opportunities.
The undergraduate degree in Health Services Administration is offered in a variety of formats that include classes on-line, in the evenings, and on weekends to meet the needs of adults living and working in the metropolitan area.
University Center Macomb
A variety of courses in the undergraduate degree program in Health Services Administration are offered at University Center Macomb which is adjacent to Macomb Community College Center Campus. For the convenience of residents of Macomb County, the core curriculum courses needed to complete a four-year degree are offered at this site. Degree Completion Program
The Health Services Administration program provides an opportunity for those changing careers or health care personnel who have some college credits or a community college degree to complete a bachelor’s degree in healthcare management. For example, nurses, respiratory therapists, laboratory technicians, medical records personnel, dental hygienists and other certified health care personnel have completed their bachelor's degree through this program. This degree completion program has been designed specifically for persons who are qualified, certified, registered or licensed as health professionals, who were educated through an accredited two-year college or community college program and who are at junior level.
Admission Criteria
In order to be admitted to the Health Services Administration program, applicants must meet entrance requirements of the University. In addition, to gain acceptance to the program students must fulfill the following criteria:
Freshman
First-time college students must have a minimum high school GPA of 2.50 and have completed two years of high school mathematics with a grade of C or higher. Scores on the College Entrance Examination Board (SAT) or the American College Test (ACT) will also be examined. High school graduates who are properly prepared to undertake the Health Services Administration program should have a college preparatory program as outlined in the “Recommended High School Preparation” section of this catalog under “Admission to the University.”
Transfer
Transfer students must have minimum undergraduate GPA of 2.00 and must complete UDM placement tests in English composition and mathematics.
Conditional Admission
Conditional admission may be granted to those students whose academic achievement falls below the standards required for full-admissions status. In such cases, the applicant may be required to fulfill course work and/or conditions before full-admissions status is granted.
Academic Standards
Students in the Health Services Administration program must attain a minimum grade of “C” or better in all HSA courses. In addition, students must maintain a cumulative 2.0 grade point average. The academic policies in the Student Handbook govern academic conduct, progression, withdrawal and dismissal.
University Core Curriculum
All undergraduate degree students at University of Detroit Mercy are required to fulfill the objectives of the University’s Core Curriculum. The curriculum consists of courses designed to meet objectives which ensure that students receive an overall education consistent with the mission of the University.
