Provides a background in health assessment and management of medical emergencies in the dental office. The role of the dental hygienist in preventing and handling life-threatening situation is discussed.

DS 820 Pain and Anxiety Control

The lecture and laboratory practicum is designed to provide students with the basic and current concepts of local anesthetics and pain control and provide for safe and effective administration of local anesthetics. Included is the rationale for pain control, psychological considerations, armamentarium, essential anatomy, physiology and pharmacology of anesthetic agents. There will be detailed instruction in local anesthetic technique and an introduction to the use of nitrous oxide analgesia as a means of anxiety control.
