DMS 171 Introduction to Design

Prerequisites:




As an introductory course to design, DMS171 engages the student in the basic techniques in drawing and design as well as the design process. The course will touch on design concepts such as composition, symmetry, color theory, etc. - utilizing graphic tools ranging from charcoal to pencil, paint , ink and digital media.

DMS 180 Introduction to Digital Media Studies

Introduces students to a growing field of research and design rooted in critical analysis of film, television, music, radio, and digital media. Students combine the study of media theory with design through the completion of projects. The projects explore the design process as well as media production and cultural and social critique. In addition, students will create present actions of their work and develop the methods of in-class dialogue and critique as integral aspects of the media design professional

DMS 191 Digital Media Studio 1

This is a laboratory/studio course that engages the student in the practices and theories of critique of electronic media by emphasizing a critical approach to technology. Projects range from practical to highly experimental and include Web design, digital video, animation and live presentations. This design studio is open to all students. Recommended pre-requisite: CIS 103: Web Productivity Tools.

DMS 291 Digital Media Studio II

Must have completed all Year 1 DMS curriculum courses as well as DMS191.


As the 2nd DMS studio, this course builds on the ideas, concepts and design processes of DMS191. The course intends to continue to engage students in the practices and theories of "Digital Culture" by emphasizing a critical approach to technology combined with design for optimal communication. Projects range from practical to highly experimental and include Web design, digital video, animation, and live presentations. The design studios are a required component of the DMS major, but are open to all students. Workload, design as well as theoretical sophistication and expectations increase incrementally from DMS191 through to DMS491.

DMS 298 Video Game Design

This course teaches students the history and fundamentals of game design. But unlike most other game design courses in the US, the focus of the student projects would be on the production of “critical video games,” games that are designed to both entertain and educate. Typical projects for the course would include the development of video games which combine design as well as thoughtful critique of our culture and digital media, as well as developing an advertisement complimenting the creation of a complete game.

Must have successfully completed all year 1 DMS curriculum as well as DMS 191. Or permission of the instructor.


As the 3rd DMS studio, this course continues to build on the previous studios and the interdisciplinary courses the DMS student has pursued. Students are encouraged to further their critical approach to technology and to implement thoughtful design for optimal communication. Projects range from practical to highly experimental and include Web design, digital video, animation, and live presentations. The design studios are a required component of the DMS major, but are open to all students. Workload, design as well as theoretical and critical sophistication and expectations increase incrementally from DMS191 to DMS491.

DMS 491 Digital Media Studio IV

Must have completed all of years 1,2 & 3 of the DMS curriculum courses or the permission of the instructor.


As the 4th and most advanced DMS studio, this course challenges the students who have already completed DMS191, DMS291 and DMS391. Therefore, expectations of the students are that they not only create projects that emphasize a critical approach to design and our “Digital Culture”, but in addition, are challenged to apply the DMS interdisciplinary approach along with their own personal critique into thoughtful design projects. The design studios are a required component of the DMS major, but are open to all students. Workload, design as well theoretical and critical sophistication and expectations increase incrementally from DMS191 to DMS491.

DMS 495 Digital Culture Project

Independent Study or Coop. Coop is highly encouraged as an opportunity for the student to explore his/her area of interest in a professional setting. These projects are directed on an individual or group basis, and they combine disciplinary knowledge with real-world experience. Students are advised to integrate a service component into their projects. This course may be repeated for up to 12 credits.

DMS 499 Digital Media Portfolio

In order to graduate from the DMS Program, students must assemble a Digital Media Portfolio for delivery on the Web, CD, DVD etc., which includes a student's C.V. and samples of work completed while enrolled in the Program. The portfolio is intended to prepare students for entry into the job market or graduate school. Portfolios are reviewed by the DMS Advisory Board.
