EDU 5000 Methods of Educational Research

Scholarly writing that tells the story of educational research is an essential skill for the professional educator. This course is designed to enable students to critically review research and prepare students to conduct their own research projects. Students will learn to develop a researchable problem, conduct a literature review, and develop a methodology for conducting research on that problem. The culminating activity for this class is a written research proposal and presentation of that proposal to the class.

Serves as an introduction to the teaching profession through classroom activities, relevant study and research, and fieldwork. Field experience in elementary or secondary schools is mandatory and forms the core of this course. Students considering teaching gain 'first hand' classroom experience to clarify career goals and aspirations. For those already in the field, the course allows time for critical self-reflection and focus. Students are introduced to departmental policies, procedures and personnel as well as the State of Michigan Standards for Teaching. Extensive student interaction and participation creates a community of learners that is central to the experience and to the profession. Twenty hours (20) of field observation are required.

This course is designed to help students understand the important aspects of elementary reading instruction as a dynamic, complex, interactive and constructive process. It will prepare teachers for developing fluency in reading in students and for fostering the enjoyment of reading. Students will also be provided with the theoretical and practical knowledge necessary for fully understanding the reading process. This class will provide teachers with an abundance of strategies for improving students' reading performance before, during and after reading. The content of the course will link to the National Council for the Teaching of English/International Reading Association Guidelines. Fieldwork must be in content area of certification (i.e., students who plan to become certified in economics must complete fieldwork in economics). Students develop items for professional portfolios. Classroom management strategies including developing and managing daily routines, optimizing students opportunities to learn, facilitation of effective instructional time, and using technology to manage the learning environment. A central topic is building a productive diverse context where teachers can positively affect student behavior.

Study of a problem in the student's area of concentration utilizing appropriate research design and techniques. A graduate research project and reportis completed during this course.
