Description

Program Description
A post-masters graduate certificate in Adult Clinical Nurse Specialty (CNS) provides the opportunity for nurses with a master’s degree in a non-clinical area such as nursing education to enhance their preparation for teaching by adding the clinical specialty in adult health. The American Association of Colleges of Nursing stated that clinically focused graduate preparation is the minimal expectation for clinical instruction and the coordination and mentoring of preceptors. The Nursing Faculty Loan Program, a HRSA funding source for tuition assistance for graduate students preparing to become educators, also emphasizes the importance of having an advanced clinical specialty as well as preparation in educational pedagogies to teach in nursing programs.

The Adult Health Clinical Nurse Specialist Post-Master’s Certificate Program at the University of Detroit Mercy provides qualified nurses with the opportunity to gain specialty knowledge in adult health advanced practice nursing. Applicants’ transcripts will be reviewed to be sure that the requirements for national CNS certification are met through their previous courses and the courses provided through this post-masters certificate program. Advanced clinical specialty courses prepare students for the role of Clinical Nurse Specialist in Adult Health. The certificate program includes learning in the areas of advanced pathophysiology, advanced physical assessment, advanced pharmacology, and the role of the clinical nurse specialist. The clinical nurse specialist courses include a total of 500 hours of clinical practicum experience working with a clinical nurse specialist in a variety of settings. Upon completion of the post-master’s certificate, the nurse will be eligible to sit for the examination for the Adult Health Clinical Nurse Specialist certification through the American Nurses Credentialing Center.
