PAS 510 Patient Evaluation Practicum I

Introduces the student to the medical history and physical exam skills required to perform a complete medical evaluation of the HEENT, Pulmonary, Cardiac and Abdominal systems. The student will learn effective communication skills, the art of interviewing as well as construction and writing of an organized medical history and physical examination.

The logical extension of the medical history and physical diagnosis completed in PAS 510. The student will continue to learn the medical history and physical examination skills as they relate to the musculoskeletal neurological, integumentary, genital and reproductive systems. The student will refine the basic competencies obtained in PAS 510 and begin to integrate clinical medicine in case related problem solving and patient management exercises.

PAS 524 Clinical Medicine I

Intensive study of human disease from the perspectives of epidemiology, etiology, clinical manifestations and course, diagnostic tests, treatment and prognosis. The series of clinical medicine (524, 525, 526) incorporates the health promotion/disease prevention model. All the major areas of medicine are studied over the course of one year. This study emphasizes the differential diagnoses and diagnostic problem solving.

PAS 593 Scholarly Project

With this option the student completes a project in the areas of clinical practice, education, management, or research. The project could include: an evidence based clinical project, a teaching project, outcomes or program evaluation, needs assessment, preparation of a review article, research utilization, quality assurance, or other projects. It involves the writing of a scholarly paper which includes an introduction and literature review, then (depending upon the type of project) methods, results, and discussion. Public sharing of the project might be in traditional forms (journal article, poster presentation) or new media (web site creation or revision).

PAS 597 Field Research Project

The master’s field research project may involve a research problem identified by the student or it may involve student participation in some existing faculty and/or agency research projects. Students should be involved in all steps of the research process: problem statement, review of literature, hypothesis, data collection and analysis. A field research project involves application of the research process to health organization problems and their solutions. Possibilities include surveys, replication studies, pilot studies, evaluation studies and/or quality assurance studies. The committee for the field research project requires at least two faculty, one of whom will serve as committee chair.

PAS 598 Research Utilization Project

This option involves a critical review of available research related to appropriate interventions. It examines available solutions to a problem and pilot tests an application appropriate for the setting. The research utilization process includes the following steps: problem statement, search of the literature, selection of the most applicable solution for the setting, pilot of solution and evaluation of the outcomes. The committee for the research utilization project requires at least two faculty, one of whom will serve as committee chair.

PAS 599 Thesis

With this option, students must identify an original research problem which is feasible and worthwhile to study and utilize all the steps of the research process. The decision to choose the thesis option should be done in conjunction with the student’s academic advisor, with whom the student can explore the appropriateness of the option. The thesis option cannot be done as a group project.
