"The State of the University"
Summary of the President's remarks at Fall Convocation,
August 18, 2006
University of Detroit Mercy President Gerard L. Stockhausen, S.J., Ph.D., began his 2006 Convocation remarks with the announcement that for the sixth consecutive year UDM ranks in the top tier of Midwestern master's universities, according to U.S.News & World Report's "America's Best Colleges 2007" issue. In addition, UDM ranks fifth in its category for school diversity and eighth in the "Great School, Great Prices" listing among Midwestern master's universities.
President Stockhausen then provided an overview about UDM responding to the following:
- Who are we?
- Where are we going?
- How are we organized to get there?
UDM's identity is defined by its mission statement with emphasis on Catholic, urban and comprehensive descriptors. UDM's strategic plan, a draft of which is under review by Shared Governance committees, addresses the University's direction.
President Stockhausen provided specific highlights related to the Strategic Plan, including:
- Fall Term 2006 enrollment is on target to reach its goal.
- The Board of Trustees approved a facilities plan at its June 23 meeting, which encompasses a new location for the Dental School, and construction and renovation projects on the Riverfront and McNichols campuses.
- Fund raising will play a critical role in helping the University meet its goals, as preparations are under way to initiate a comprehensive campaign.
According to President Stockhausen, all indications show "Great Things" for UDM - not only for this school year but also for its future.
