Leading and Serving in Our Community

servicedayThe Inauguration of University of Detroit Mercy President Gerard L. Stockhausen, S.J., Ph.D., provides the University with an opportunity to celebrate its heritage and reaffirm its mission to its many constituents: students, parents, faculty and staff; community, civic, business, religious, educational and political leaders, as well as our alumni.

The Inaugural year also allows the University to highlight defining characteristics of the University and its accomplishments. During the 2004-2005 academic year, the University will focus on the Inaugural theme: Leadership and Service in Our Community to reflect and illustrate the numerous ways UDM faculty, staff, students and alumni embody these characteristics to the benefit of our community.

On Wednesday, September 29 of Inauguration Week, faculty, staff and students performed volunteer service at the following sites:

  • McAuley Nurse Managed Center
  • Habitat for Humanity
  • Capuchin Soup Kitchen
  • Detroit Rescue Mission
  • Focus Hope
  • Southwest Detroit Environmental Vision
  • Children’s Center
  • Northstar Community Development Corp.
  • UDM Dental Health Day

As an independent Catholic institution of higher education, the University of Detroit Mercy supports a mission focused on teaching and learning. Both the Jesuit and Mercy traditions, which guide the University, have emphasized community service as a vital aspect in the education and development of students. Through a comprehensive curriculum, students are challenged to develop their social, leadership and service responsibilities. UDM continually reaffirms this commitment to service as students, faculty and staff initiate and participate in community outreach activities to benefit Detroit area residents.

Please visit our Community Outreach page for examples of some of the UDM's outreach activities throughout the school year.
