UDM will celebrate the 90th birthday of longtime Professor of Biology R. Gerard Albright, S.J., on Sunday, April 3. The event will open with a Mass at noon in the St. Ignatius Chapel in the Commerce & Finance Building on McNichols Campus. An open house will take place from 1 to 4 p.m. in Lansing-Reilly Hall. All alumni, faculty and staff are encouraged to stop by and wish him well.

Gerard Albright, S.J.Albright began teaching biology part-time in 1955 and became a full-time faculty member in 1960. He has chaired the Biology Department, Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and served on many University committees during his tenure. Over the past 55 years, he has taught 19 different lecture and laboratory courses, including comparative and human anatomy, histology and embryology, to more than 4,000 students. He also developed a new core science course specifically dealing with evolution and developed the course, “Science for Non-Science Majors.”

"Lending a hand to our students as they prepare for and face the ups and downs of life is itself a wonderful and worthwhile enterprise,” said Albright.

“But to help them more intimately bring God into the picture is of key importance, and by far the greater challenge for me.  Looking back over the decades, as well as ahead toward whatever is to come, I view this as the essence of what my call from God to life as a Jesuit is really all about,” Albright added.

His students have gone on to become leading scientists, physicians and dentists serving Detroit and the world.

While the event is free, reservations are required. Contact Assistant Director of Alumni Relations Angelina Jaroszewski,  at 313-993-1540 or vestaj@udmercy.edu or visit community.udmercy.edu/Albright.
