UDM Hosts Black History Month Guest Speaker

In celebration of Black History Month, UDM will host guest speaker Patrick McGarrity, an independent scholar and longtime instructor of history at Belleville Area College in Illinois. The event will take place on Feb. 17 from noon to 1 p.m. in the Student Center President's Dining Room on the McNichols Campus.

McGarrityMcGarrity, an Irish immigrant, will discuss connections between Northern Ireland and the southern Civil Rights Movement in his presentation, "The Civil Rights Movement and the Northern Ireland Struggle.” His discussion will focus on the influences that the southern Civil Rights Movement in the U.S. has had on Northern Ireland, his native home. In discussing the 1965 Selma movement, McGarrity’s presentation will also coincide with the Student Programming Board’s showing of the feature film Selma on Feb. 16 at 7 p.m. in the Grounds Coffeehaus also on the McNichols Campus.
