Many children in Detroit have a lot to smile about after the 14th annual “Give Kids A Smile” day at UDM’s School of Dentistry. With the help of dentists, dental hygienists, faculty, staff and students, University of Detroit Mercy School of Dentistry provided free oral health care services to children from low-income families in the Detroit area.

Give Kids a Smile"There are so many children in our area that have not seen a dentist," said Dr. Mert Aksu, dean of the School of Dentistry. "UDM's dental clinic provides care to the homeless, the elderly and AIDS patients, and this event reflects the University's mission to help others," he added. With the assistance of 4th year dental students and faculty supervising, UDM provided 42 cleanings, 39 fluoride treatments, 94 sealants, 24 restoratives procedures and five extractions. "Give Kids a Smile,” a program hosted annually by the School of Dentistry, has been a success for the past decade.

"Give Kids A Smile" is a program designed for children ages four through 16 who would not normally have dental care available to them. The children received comprehensive dental care and were provided vouchers to come back to the UDM Dental Clinic for additional care. All participants took home a free oral health kit containing toothpaste, floss… and a big smile.
