Starting this year, University of Detroit Mercy will partner with the Archdiocese of Detroit to provide professional development for educators and administrators who are part of Archdiocese of Detroit schools.

UDM has worked with Archdiocese of Detroit schools for many years placing Education Program students as fieldwork students and student teachers with teachers and administrative interns with building leaders.

However, through this new, more formalized partnership, authorized by the State Department of Education, UDM’s Education Program will offer the local talent of faculty, alumni and current students to provide needs-based professional development programs. UDM’s training sessions will focus on reading strategies and comprehension, differentiated instruction and leadership training. Faculty will also serve as local “mentors” with a shared Catholic mission.

Lorri MacDonald, UDM’s Education Department chair, said building relationships with local Catholic schools is good for the University as well. “The main advantage is that we are truly invested,” MacDonald said. “It’s a true partnership.”

In January 2015, UDM will implement a structured plan at two Archdiocese of Detroit schools and will eventually involve more schools throughout the year.
