The 15th annual University of Detroit Mercy Ethics Bowl, held Oct. 31, 2014, was once again an engaging campus-wide event as UDM student teams impressed judges with their answers to difficult ethical questions. After five hours of intense ethical debate, “I Think, Therefore I Win” came out on top and will be representing the University at the regional Ethics Bowl competition at Harper College in Chicago on Nov. 15.

“I Think, Therefore I Win” is comprised of philosophy major Chris Henisse, biochemistry majors Joshua Henning and David Brush, criminal justice major Mercedes Black and biology major Lauren Buck. Philosophy professors Marty Leever and David Koukal will be accompanying the team to Chicago in an effort to be the second UDM team to advance to the national Ethics Bowl competition in February.

Inspired by TV’s College Bowl, the Ethics Bowl looks to examine and find answers for tough ethical issues. Competition begins when the moderator poses a variety of ethical questions to each competing team, and the team that comes up with the most morally defensible answer will win the match. Each team received a set of ethical issues in advance of the competition, and questions posed to teams at the competition are taken from that set. A panel of judges rates answers in terms of intelligibility, focus, depth and judgment.
