Law School Expands Clinics
The UDM School of Law has expanded its legal outreach with the following community clinics:
- Urban Law Clinic (now including Veterans' clinical programs and a Criminal Trials Clinic)
- Immigration Law Clinic
- Mobile Law Office
- Mediation Clinic
- Appellate Advocacy Clinic
The clinics inspire UDM law students to make pro bono services an integral part of their legal careers.
School of Law International Initiatives
In addition to the School of Law's joint degree program with the University of Windsor School of Law, which provides students with both an American and a Canadian law degree within three years, the law school also offers a special NAFTA program incorporating law courses from Mexico, Canada and the U.S.
Students Excel in National Law Competitions
UDM's School of Law Moot Court teams enjoyed national success, winning awards and/or advancing preliminary rounds in eight of the nine competitions entered. Awards included:
- Niagara International Law: National Champions
- NYU Immigration Law Competition: Best Brief Award; Quarter-finalist Team
- PACE Environmental Law Competition: Best Oralist Award; Semi-finalist Team
- State of Michigan Competition: Best Oralist; Semi-finalist team
- McGee Civil Rights Competition: Best Oralist Award (Overall); Best Oralist Award (preliminary rounds); Third Place Oralist Award; Quarter-finalist Team (Team One); Quarter-finalist Team (Team Two)
- Jessup International Law Competition: Fourth-place Brief Award; ranked third in overall preliminary round raw points
Applied Legal Theory and Analysis Program
The Applied Legal Theory and Analysis program was ranked in the top 20 legal writing programs in the nation for the second year by U.S.News and World Report. It also was recognized with a national award from the Legal Writing Institute and the Association of Legal Writing Directors.
Law School Recognized for Outreach Programs
The American Bar Association Student Law Division has awarded UDM's School of Law the 2006 Judy M. Weightman Memorial Public Interest Award. The award is given annually to a law school or individual in recognition of outstanding community service and public interest programming. UDM provides community programs through its Urban Law Clinic, which offers legal representation from law students to clients, as well as through the Mobile Law Office, which provides legal services to the underserved, and the Mediation Clinic and Appellate Advocacy Clinic.
National Firms Seek UDM Law Students
An expanded number of prestigious law firms from across the nation participate in on- and off-campus interviews with UDM law students, resulting in employment opportunities in N.Y., Washington, Chicago, Phoenix, and other cities.
