Great Things at the School of Dentistry

Great Academics

  • During the 2013-14 Academic Year, the School of Dentistry completed a successful review by the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) for its dental hygiene and expanded pre-doctoral dental education programs. CODA approved these UDM programs for the status of “Accredited without Reporting Requirements.”
  • The entering class of 2018 has 144 students, with an average GPA of 3.65 and average Dental Admissions Test scores of 21, placing UDM students in the top 85th percentile nationally among all DAT candidates.
  •  The School of Dentistry received a $350,000 Health Careers Opportunity Program (HCOP) grant to provide programming to increase the number of individuals from educationally or economically disadvantaged backgrounds who enter the health and allied health professions program. Through an educational pipeline program, HCOP provides the support necessary to compete for, enter, and graduate from health or allied health professions schools.

Great Outcomes

  • At the American Dental Education Association (ADEA) Annual Session held in March 2014, the UDM ADEA chapter received the Award for Outstanding Chapter Organization, which recognizes students who create programs, sponsor events and educational activities and support advances in dental education.

  • The American Student Dental Association (ASDA) annual Gold Crown Awards recognized Graham Greenland ‘10, current ASDA Chapter President, with the District 6 Delegate of the Year Award for his  personal dedication and outstanding achievement on behalf of ASDA and its local chapter members.

  • Dr. Riyad Al-Qawasmi, associate professor in the Department of Orthodontics, was awarded the American Association of Orthodontists’ 2014 Subtelny, Baker, Eastman Teaching Fellowship Award of $15,000 for research  to evaluate the heritability of smile genetics in non-treated siblings.
