UDM Student Athletes Record Highest Graduation Rate in State
University of Detroit Mercy student-athletes have once again received high marks in the annual Graduation Success Rate (GSR) figures released Thursday by the NCAA. For the second-straight year the school boasts the highest rate in the State of Michigan (88) among the schools that offer athletic programs at the Division I level. The Titans also had six teams with perfect GSR scores. Overall, the numbers show that Division I student-athletes continue to perform well in the classroom, and more of them are graduating.
Titans Lacrosse Reaches NCAA Championship Tournament
Just five years after the team's inception, UDM men's lacrosse earned a place in the 2013 NCAA championship tournament. As the 2013 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference champions, the Titans played Notre Dame in the first round of the NCAA championship, which resulted in a narrow lost to end their post-season play.
Student Athlete's Victory over Cancer Spotlighted
UDM graduate student Amanda Campbell was featured on WXYZ-TV's 7 Action News, describing her experience overcoming thyroid cancer while a undergraduate student athlete on the UDM women's track and field team. Watch the video on WXYZ.com.
Director of Athletics named
On May 28, UDM named Robert C. Vowels as Director of Athletics. With more than 23 years of intercollegiate athletics experience, Vowels was most recently vice president of Membership and Student-Athlete Affairs at the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). Titans Basketball Champions
The Detroit Titans women's basketball team made 2013 a championship season by winning the Women's Basketball Invitational (WBI) tournament, March 30. It was the first post-season tournament win for Titans women's basketball since 1981. Video highlights, photos and details on the championship game are posted on DetroitTitans.com. Also, Doug Anderson of the men's basketball team won the Denny's Slam Dunk Championship on April 4, as part of the State Farm College Slam Dunk & Three-Point Championships on ESPN. Read the story.
Detroit Titans Postseason Highlight
The 2013 Titans made four postseason appearances (two NCAA appearances), three conference players of the year, two conference championships, one All-American, and the unique status of being among the nation's best Division I-AAA schools. During the 2012-13 season only four of the 32 division I universities that all compete in men's and women's basketball, men's lacrosse and women's golf reached the postseason. Detroit was the only DI-AAA member in the group, which included three powerhouse programs, all of which will be in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) in 2013-14 in Duke, North Carolina and Notre Dame.
Detroit Titan Women's Basketball Team has Back to Back Wins
The Titan women's basketball team posted its second-straight winning season in 2012-13, the first time it has had back-to-back winning seasons since 2001 (17-12) and 2002 (16-14). UDM now has two-straight years of 20 wins, the first time that has happened since it had four-straight years between 1978-82.
Detroit Titans Men’s Basketball Horizon League Champions
The Titan men's basketball team advanced to the Horizon League championship game for the eighth time and won its third title.
Detroit Titans Men’s Lacrosse 2013 MAAC Champions
The Detroit men’s lacrosse team won its’ first-ever MAAC Championship in 2013, defeating top-seeded Marist, 7-6, and third-seeded Siena, 11-10 in overtime, to make the NCAA Championship, where the Titans faced No. 2 Notre Dame in the first round.
Michigan Emmy Given to Detroit Titans Court Report
Over the last three years, the Detroit Titans Court Report has profiled and followed the University of Detroit Mercy men's basketball team from the start of the season all the way through its postseason achievements. For its extraordinary programming over this past year the series on FOX Sports Detroit has won another Michigan Emmy for Outstanding Documentary (Historical) from the season’s first episode, Legends & Traditions.
Lacrosse Magazine focuses on strength and Championships for Detroit Titans
The University of Detroit Mercy had both its men's and women's lacrosse teams featured in the November issue of Lacrosse Magazine. Senior Troy Dennis of the men's lacrosse team graces the cover while working out at UDM. Inside the magazine, a feature on Detroit lacrosse called "Motor City Moxie" talks about the strength and conditioning of the Titans and the work done off the field in addition to the championship runs from both teams in the 2013 season. Junior Mike Birney of the men's team and sophomore Kylie Birney of the UDM women's lacrosse team, Mike's sister, were also featured and interviewed in the November issue.
Detroit Women's Basketball Team Sets University Record
The Detroit women's basketball team set a school record with 16 home wins during the 2012-13 season, tied for the second most home victories in the country.
Detroit Men's Golf Team Wins Most Horizon League Championships
The Detroit men's golf team has won seven Horizon League championships, the most by any members past or present.
Detroit Women’s Golf Team Tied For NCAA Record
The 2012-13 Detroit women’s golf team put on a season to remember in Motown as the Titans played in 12 tournaments on the season and nine times - 75% - took home some hardware as the winning team, which is believed to the tied for the NCAA record that was set by Arizona in 1999-00. Detroit had just nine tournament titles in its history coming into the year and matched that in one season.
Coach Mark Engel Begins 23rd Season
Head men’s golf coach Mark Engel will begin his 23rd season at the helm of the golf program in 2013-14 and during his time, Detroit has won six championships, while also coming in second three times and third on two other occasions. UDM captured Coach Engel’s first title in 1999 and followed in 2001, 2002, 2005, 2007 and 2010. The Titans earned an automatic NCAA bid in each of those latter five years.
Detroit Women's Basketball Team Wins Firs Postseason Tournament Since 1981
The 2012-13 Detroit women's basketball team won the Women's Basketball Invitational (WBI), the first postseason tournament title for UDM since 1981 when the Titans defeated Michigan, Wayne State, and Oakland in the State-Large College Tournament.
Horizon League Player of the Year is the First In Titan History
Lindsey Lammers became the first Titan to be named the Horizon League Player of the Year in 2013 as she led the HL with a school-record 76.2 average. She posted a pair of wins and now has five medalist honors in her career - second all-time at UDM - and will enter her senior year at Detroit with a school record 78.3 average.
Tewaaraton Award Recognizes Top Lacrosse Players
Former Titan men's lacrosse standout Joel Matthews became the first Titan in school history to be named to the Tewaaraton Award Watch List in 2012, while fellow teammate and Canadian Shayne Adams made the list in 2013. The Tewaaraton Award annually recognizes the top men's and women's lacrosse player in the country in any collegiate Division.
