Titans Receive High Marks in Latest NCAA’s APR Report
No less than eight Titan athletic teams brought home perfect scores in the NCAA Division I Academic Progress Rate report issued in June for 2008-09. At the same time, every one of UDM’s varsity teams registered a multi-year APR above the minimum standard (925) established by the NCAA, and all varsity teams met NCAA standards. Eight teams, which received perfect 1000s for 2008-09, are men’s and women’s fencing, men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s tennis, men’s track and field and softball.UDM Student-Athletes Generate Academic Accolades
Three members of the 2010 Horizon League Champion Detroit Titans men’s golf team – David Byrne, Jeff Clarridge and Britt Pronk – were named to the Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholars Team, while five members of the 2010 Horizon League champion Titan women’s golf team – Alex Aversa, Rachel McHenry, Alainna Stefan, Marni Achterhoff and Collette Hansen – were honored by the National Golf Coaches Association as members of its All-American Scholar Team.
The men’s golf team was also honored by the Golf Coaches Association of America for having one of the 10 highest Division I team grade point averages in the nation for 2009-10. With a 3.58 team GPA, the Titans received President’s Special Recognition status for earning a team GPA of at least a 3.50.
Additionally, UDM women’s basketball senior Brigid Mulroy was named an honorable mention member of the 2010 Division I-AAA Athletic Directors Association Scholar-Athlete Team.
The Detroit men’s and women’s track and field teams were recognized as All-Academic Scholar Teams of the Year for the 2009-10 season by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Association (USTFCCA), while the men’s and women’s cross country programs earned All-Academic Team status for 2009 in recognition of their academic achievement.
The men’s and women’s tennis teams earned ITA All-Academic Teams in the summer of 2010, while Alex Latosinsky, Nick Tolomei, Patrick Troy, Melanie Capuano, Svetlana Flankova, Carolina Salas Espinosa and Sophie Sjoberg-Sundstrom were all ITA Scholar-Athletes. On the court, the 2010 women’s tennis team finished runner-up at the Horizon League Championships for the second straight season.
Over 65 percent of all Detroit student-athletes were named to the AD Honor Roll, which marked the 19th consecutive semester in which over 50 percent of the University’s student-athletes have achieved a 3.0 or better. More than 100 student-athletes were listed on the Horizon League’s fall and spring Academic Honor Roll, while 18 Titans were selected to the HL All-Academic Teams. For the Titans competing out of the Horizon League, six men’s lacrosse players landed on the All-MAAC Academic Team, while a conference best five women lacrosse players were selected to the All-NLC Academic Team.
UDM Athletics Inks Partnership Deal with Nike
The Detroit Titans Athletic Department announced an exclusive agreement with Nike last October. Nike now provides apparel for all 19 of the Titans’ Division I varsity teams as part of the arrangement. In the near future, Titan fans will be able to “Wear What the Titans Wear” by purchasing officially licensed Detroit Titan Logoed Nike products online and at Calihan Hall in the Titan Gift Shop.UDM Sees Hall of Fame Grow to 112 Members
UDM inducted 10 new members to the Detroit Titans Sports Hall of Fame in January. The 2010 Induction Class included former Horizon League Men’s Basketball Players of the Year Jermaine Jackson and Rashad Phillips as well as two other former Detroit basketball greats Cassandra Pack and Joe Kopicki. Other inductees included former stars from baseball, Pat Adams and Mike Pesci, cross country/track and field, Ken Dubois and Kim Jess, golfer Adam Walicki and tennis player Maria Pandele. UDM established its Sports Hall of Fame—which now totals 117 individuals— in 1977 in order to honor those student-athletes, coaches and administrators who have helped develop the successful tradition of Titan Athletics.Titans Unveil New James Haas Men’s Basketball Suite
The Athletic Department celebrated the official dedication of the James E. Haas Men’s Basketball Office Suite in February. The suite was completely renovated and remodeled for the use of head coach Ray McCallum and the Titan basketball staff. The new suite includes a large reception area, individual offices for all of the coaches that feature flat screen TVs for game review and scouting purposes, a conference room and a state of the art video/film basketball operations office. The adjacent Sophia Boone Conference Room was also revamped during the major construction project. Haas was the lead donor for the ambitious project, which was modeled largely after the newly renovated women’s basketball offices located in Calihan Hall’s Wolak Olympic Sports Suite.
